Position Summary:
Preventative Maintenance (PM): Proactively inspects, cleans, and services refrigeration equipment to prevent breakdowns. This includes cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, lubricating motors, testing electrical components, and calibrating thermostats and control systems.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics: Responds to equipment failures and alarms. They use diagnostic tools like pressure gauges, multimeters, and leak detectors to accurately identify the root cause of a problem, whether it’s mechanical, electrical, or a control system issue.
Repairs and Service: Performs a wide range of repairs, from fixing refrigerant leaks and replacing faulty compressors to repairing electrical wiring and reprogramming control panels. This work is often time-sensitive and requires a calm, logical approach under pressure.
System Monitoring: Regularly monitors system pressures, temperatures, and performance data to ensure all units are operating within specified parameters. They are responsible for maintaining precise temperature settings required for different food products.
Compliance and Documentation: Maintains meticulous records of all maintenance, repairs, and refrigerant usage as required by environmental and safety regulations (like TSSA in Ontario or equivalent provincial bodies). They ensure the facility remains compliant with food safety protocols (e.g., HACCP) and workplace safety standards (e.g., lockout/tagout procedures).
Installation: Assists with or leads the installation of new refrigeration units, piping, and related infrastructure as the facility expands or upgrades.
Schedule: Monday – Friday. Full time position, some weekend work will be required. Overtime may be required at short notice.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Install, maintain or repair all refrigeration and HVAC systems within the building, meeting or exceeding all applicable codes.
Conduct maintenance and diagnostics on automated computer controlled refrigeration and facility temperature systems.
General mechanical maintenance duties as assigned or required or as situations demand.
This position does involve work in the freezer, and can be physically demanding.
The successful applicant will be required to be on call for emergency service on an as-needed basis.
Qualifications:
Must posses an Inter-Provincial Journeyman Refrigeration Mechanic certification, registered in Alberta.
Intimate knowledge of all applicable local, provincial and federal refrigeration codes & willingness to perform electrical work to code.
Demonstrable, long term experience in all phases of commercial and industrial refrigeration installation, troubleshooting and repair.
In order to fulfill the requirements of this position, ongoing training in a number of areas may be required, to be provided by GFS.
Demonstrable experience in the installation and maintenance of refrigeration PLC’s (Programmable Logic Controllers) is an asset.
Mechanical maintenance repair experience is an asset, as is experience in any of the various construction trades.
A valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license is required.
