Gordon Food Service to Build New Distribution Centre in Ajax, Ontario

Gordon Food Service, a privately held and family-managed foodservice distribution company with operations in the U.S. and Canada, today announced its plans to build a new distribution centre in the Town of Ajax, Ontario to expand its capacity and capabilities.

The new 330,000 sq.ft. state-of-the-art warehouse will support the distribution of foodservice products across Ontario. Gordon Food Service will break ground in the spring of this year and anticipates the facility being operational in fall 2019.

“Gordon Food Service first established a presence in Canada in the early 1990’s, and we have grown steadily to now operate coast to coast”, said Rich Wolowski, North American President and CEO, Gordon Food Service. “The new Ajax facility further strengthens our position as the largest privately-held broadline distributor in Canada, and I’m excited about the opportunities this new facility will create for our customers across Ontario.”

“This investment is a testament to our strong reputation and relationships with customers across Canada,” added Dean Noble, President, Gordon Food Service Canada. “Thanks to the great success of our Canadian operation, the warehouse in Milton, Ontario is reaching capacity. The new Ajax distribution centre will allow us to expand our capabilities and better serve our customers.”

“Strategically situated in the Carruthers Creek Business Park, the new Gordon Food Service facility will create new jobs in the logistics and warehousing services sector in Ajax,” said Mayor Steve Parish, Town of Ajax. “Through our unique PriorityPath program, Gordon Food Service will receive expert support to navigate the development approvals process, including expedited site plan and building approvals. In partnership with Durham Region, we are proud to facilitate the creation of local jobs and contribute to the economic sustainability of our community.”

“We are pleased to welcome this investment and new job creation to the Durham Region, which will further strengthen our diversified economy,” said Kathy Weiss, Director of Economic Development and Tourism with the Region of Durham. “Durham is an excellent home for expansions such as this, due to our affordable and development-ready real estate, our talented workforce, and our extensive transportation network enabling easy access to customers and suppliers. I’m pleased our regional and local Economic Development teams were able to support Gordon Food Service throughout the development process.”

Gordon Food Service’s new distribution centre will contain numerous automated features, including product selection, sorting and truck-loading. The operations will centre around fulfillment of product orders. It will be located on the northwest corner of Ringer and Salem Streets.

“The technology and automation planned for the new Ajax facility will enable efficient and accurate customer order fulfillment, and will allow us to run multiple shifts seamlessly between inbound and outbound warehouse functions,” added Noble. “This expansion is important to sustain our growth and provide best-in-class service to our customers in the future”.
