Single-use disposables are getting greener all the time. Here\u2019s a few tips for selecting and using them.<\/h2>\n

If being \u201cgreen\u201d is important to you and the people you serve, it makes sense to evaluate your single-use disposables. A good first step is to review the language suppliers commonly use in conjunction with their earth-friendlier products. Knowing what claims and labels really mean will ease your decision-making. <\/p>\n

Made with renewable resources<\/strong>. These products typically include plant-based materials that can be replenished in the environment. (Unlike oil and minerals.)<\/p>\n

Made from recycled materials.<\/strong> Signifies that a portion of a product is made from waste that has been diverted from landfills.<\/p>\n

Compostable.<\/strong> Compostable items are capable of decomposing into a rich soil-like material through controlled processes that only occur in a commercial composting facility.<\/p>\n

Biodegradable.<\/strong> Biodegradable materials decompose into simpler organic compounds through natural biological processes\u2014but this typically happens very slowly in landfills.<\/p>\n

ASTM D6400<\/a>. <\/strong>A third-party certification used to label plastics, paper products, foam, food packaging and other solid materials designed to be composted.<\/p>\n

ASTM D6868.<\/strong> <\/a>This third-party certification confirms the compostability of biodegradable plastics used as coatings on paper and other substances.<\/p>\n

Composter Approved.<\/strong> Independent verification that a product has been field-tested and will decompose in a composting facility.<\/p>\n

Go green smartly.<\/h3>\n

Factors to consider when evaluating green disposables:<\/p>\n

1. Set your own green standards.<\/strong>
\nLet your brand and your customers dictate your green strategy.<\/p>\n

2. Consider the cost.<\/strong>
\nKeep in mind that green can come with a higher price tag.<\/p>\n

3. Prioritize performance.<\/strong>
\nKeeping food hot, cold, safe and secure has to be job one.<\/p>\n

4. Market your program.<\/strong>
\nPlan to promote your sustainability efforts.<\/p>\n

5. Think front and back of the house.<\/strong>
\nGreen isn\u2019t just for takeout\u2014there are eco-friendly dine-in disposables as well.
