But can you tell if they do? Let\u2019s consider three factors in evaluating the culture of food safety at your business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-onboarding-and-training\">1. Onboarding and Training<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Defining food safety responsibilities is vital. Just as employees learn how to clock in, they should learn about proper hand washing and food handling.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-reviewing-inspection-reports\">2. Reviewing Inspection Reports<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gfs.ca\/en-ca\/ideas\/preparing-health-inspection-what-you-need-know\">health department inspection day<\/a> or any other day, food safety practices should be in place. This allows you to use the inspection report as a guide for improvement.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-asking-questions\">3. Asking Questions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Quiz employees. \u201cDo you know why we require a hair net?\u201d or \u201cDid you know gloves aren\u2019t for protecting your hands, but for protecting food?\u201d Their answers can unveil knowledge gaps. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have evaluated employees\u2019 values and beliefs about serving safe food, strengthen your culture by defining why it\u2019s important. Focus on these three areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-prevention-of-foodborne-illness\">1. Prevention of Foodborne Illness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year foodborne illness sickens millions of people and is a factor in thousands of deaths. Carelessness, such as forgetting to wash hands, is simply dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-complying-with-regulations\">2. Complying With Regulations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Health regulations are in place to protect the public. Following them every day means the rules won\u2019t become an afterthought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-reputation\">3. Reputation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A foodborne illness outbreak could temporarily (or permanently) close your operation. It\u2019s hard to win back public trust. In addition, your business could be fined or sued. For employees, it\u2019s unlikely you will be able to pay them during a closure.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating a culture of food safety starts now and continues daily.
